A Great Tournament!
Saturday’s Anacortes Soo Bahk Do Championship was a huge success and showcased the talents of 38 students and 7 masters from across the state. This diverse group of martial artists ranged from age 5 to age 65. Students performed the forms they have been working on for their next belt evaluation test, and donned protective gear for free sparring. The victors were presented with medals provided by Fidalgo Island Walk-In Clinic. “We’re so grateful to Fidalgo Island Walk-In Clinic for providing the championship medals and to Island View School, who allowed us to use their gym,” commented Andy Arvidson, Master Instructor and Tournament Director. The support of those sponsors allowed the school to offer the tournament free of charge.
The tournament was hosted by Anacortes Soo Bahk Do, but was attended by students from many other studios in the area. The majority of the competitors were from Anacortes (68%); an impressive 18% travelled from Arlington Moo Duk Kwan under the direction of Dr. David McDonald, Master Instructor, and 5% from Channel Town Soo Bahk Do in La Conner, 5% from Burlington Moo Duk Kwan, and 3% from Mt. Vernon Soo Bahk Do.
Winter Weather/Tournament Tuneup
NOTE: Tournament registration deadline has been extended to January 26th because weather conditions have made it hard for many students to get to class. Don't forget to register!!
In spite of the weather we will be available for classes on our regular schedule this week, so stop in if you can get here safely.
We have also had requests for a Sunday afternoon class to help practice for the tournament. So if you want a chance to practice on your sparring or forms, join us:
Sunday, 1/22 from 2-5 PM at the Do Jang
This will also be a chance for Dan members to practice judging.
Hope to see all of you soon.

Consistent with our warrior/scholar philosophy of encouraging ongoing academic education among Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan (SBDMDK) practitioners, the Region 10 Dan Association is again sponsoring the Richard O’Donovan Memorial Scholarship Awards.

Kicking In The New Year!
Anacortes Soo Bahk Do students and friends kicked-in 2012 together. We started off at 11:30 PM with a lesson in how to say Happy New Year in Korean from our guest, Milnor Sa Bom Nim.
Warm-ups were followed by Ki Cho Hyung Il Bu, practitioner demonstrations of Hyung, including a demonstration of the Yang style Tai Chi - short form. Together we shared sparkling apple cider and spring water, and read each of our selections from the Song of the Ship Sam Seh, and wished each other a happy and prosperous New Year in English as well as Korean. In a spirit of Yong Gi on the part of our guests, we created our own circular group demonstration (based on direction provided by Master Hume at the Channel Town Soo Bahk Do Dan class the night before). We closed out the class with an encore of Ki Cho Hyung Il Bu, at 12:40 AM.
Considering we gave our students less than 48 hours notice of this event, this was an awesome turn-out!
Next year we’ll do our best to give students a little more notice, but for this year, “Thanks to those who joined us to start off the year!”: Milnor Sa Bom Nim, Bigelow Jo Kyo, Prescott Jo Kyo, Mrs. Simonis, Mr. Roth, Lisa Kiilsholm, Ben, Emily, Joe and Jamie Gladish.
New Class Schedule: Dan/1st Gup Practitioners
Beginning 1/3/12, the class for Dan & 1st Gup Practitioners will meet every Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.We will discuss interest in a 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday Dan Candidates class, if any of our Candidates are interested. We have also received inquiries from Mount Vernon Soo Bahk Do for the opportunity for all of our May candidates to train together in the next few months.
We realize that work and ferry schedules may not allow everyone to attend for the full two hours. We trust that each student will attend as much as they can, and should not feel any embarrassment for being late or leaving early. We just want each of you to be able to spend as much time as possible with your peers, becoming a good moodoin (Authentic practitioner) as the Moo Do Chul Hak describes.
As part of this change, the only other 6:30 p.m. class (adults and teens) will occur on Monday and Wednesday every week, beginning 01/02/12.
Celebrate the New Year With A Midnight Workout!

We will be out until about 9:30 this evening, so call my cell phone if you have questions (360-391-5880). All ranks, all ages welcome.Best wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Special All-Rank Workout/Movie Showing
Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 10th! Students of all ages (plus family members and friends) are welcome to enjoy a special afternoon work-out, learning the Pyong Ahn Forms. The workout will be followed by a showing of the original Karate Kid Movie, especially for our younger students, but open to all. This can give parents a few hours off to prepare for the busy holiday season, while their children are busy with us for the afternoon. Please RSVP for these events, so we can prepare enough popcorn. This will also be a time for students interested becoming part of our “Future Leaders” to come up with some ideas for other monthly activities.
